| Everybody, including children, can suffer from hair loss, known as alopecia by doctors. Baldness refers to excessive loss of hair from your scalp. Heredity, a medical condition or even medication can lead to baldness. The commonest type of baldness is called androgenetic alopecia. It is the cause of approximately 95% of the cases of baldness in the United States of America. Androgenetic alopecia affects mainly men. Two factors determine hair growth: a genetic predisposition to undue hair loss and the male hormone testosterone. Normally, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which stimulates the growth of hair, but also shrinks hair follicles on the scalp, causing finer, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, coupled by heightened levels of testosterone and DHT, may adversely affect scalp hair growth. Baldness occurs when the rate of hair shedding is larger than the rate of re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is shed. Androgenetic alopecia is considered a cosmetic problem. One of the most potent therapies to cure it approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is Finasteride (Propecia). Taken daily in a pill form, Propecia slows down the conversion of testosterone to DHT, hence preventing the shrinkage of hair follicles. The medication is for men only and must not be taken by women, as it may trigger birth abnormalities. GENERIC PROPECIA, which is as powerful as the branded medication, is low-priced and, thus, can be bought by a larger number of men suffering from baldness. As a result of a two years' study 83% of males aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. Most men reported improvement in appearance. Generic Propecia may lead to adverse side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Generic Propecia were infrequent and did not affect most males. An insignificant number of males reported certain sexual side effects. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of males. These side effects were temporary and went away in males after they stopped taking Generic Peopecia. These adverse side effects also went away in most males (58%) who continued taking Generic Propecia.
